Recession Proof Sports and Exercise

Everybody these days is affected by the difficult economy and most people have had to trim their expenses and over-head to adjust to the current economic conditions.  There are two sports/activities that come to mind that will provide an inexpensive activity for you that will challenge you physically as well:  Tennis and Cycling.

  The biggest challenge for tennis is finding playing partners that match your competitive level.  Tennis is most enjoyed when competing against equal competition.  Once you get engaged in the sport, you will find there is no shortage of great players at all ages.  From a cost standpoint, a good pair of shoes, a racket and a good pair of shorts with pockets is all you need.  This can be had easily for under 200.00 dollars.  Once you become more involved you will want to up-grade.  Shoes are probably the most important initial investment, tennis can be hard on your feet and leg joints, especially singles tennis.  Beware of the knees especially, so a good brace system could be necessary.  Shoes and shorts are easy.  For the racket,  you can check for sales at the sporting goods stores or check out a good used sporting goods store.  The  on-line reviews are excellent for rackets and you can check out various rackets/designs to make your choice.  Research the racket in-depth, it’s worth the extra effort, especially when you up-grade.  You can join leagues for less than 50.00 dollars and you are on your way.  Join the USTA and you can enter tournaments for 25 bucks.  Be careful getting into tournaments as they are generally very competitive.  The high schools have lighted courts, there are literally hundreds of courts to play on and they are never full.  Another great benefit of tennis is the total time to play great tennis and get some very serious cardio is about 1 1/2 hours.  It’s fun, it’s inexpensive and it doesn’t take all day like golf.  Be very careful when you begin, as injuries are prevalent in the game.  Once you get it going you’ll be hooked.

Cycling is a great form of recreation and exercise as well.  If you live in a cycling friendly town, like Va Beach, you can leave your driveway and go.  Again, research your bike choices on-line and look for sales and deals on good used bikes.  You can accessorize as you wish, I just ride with the athletic clothing I have.  Once you get more serious, accessories will become necessary.  Go to a local bike store,  browse and ask questions.  I got a road bike with up-right handle bars for 375.00 brand new marked down from 550.00.  The major expense is tire repair because of all the junk and trash in the roads.  Serious riders ride in the street, but there are plenty of places to ride where you can avoid the main roads, which can be very dangerous.  Most drivers don’t pay attention to bikers, cross walks, etc.  You really have to pay attention when riding the streets.  One thing I really like about bicycling is that you can go as hard or as easy as you want.  If you’ve had  ‘one of those days,’  you can get on your bike and grind it out as hard and as far as you want.  If you are in a more laid back mood, you can take a leisurely ride and go at the pace you feel like and still go for a long time.  Cycling really works you but it’s the one activity I do that is great exercise but you don’t really feel  it.  It doesn’t tax you like many sports but the benefits are right there with all other cardio activities.  The wind will be your biggest nemesis, besides the automobiles on the street.

If you’re looking for a new sport, don’t want to spend a lot of money and all ages can participate, these are two you will enjoy.  A knee injury has taken me out of competitive tennis, but I ride every chance I get and have learned to love riding 3-4 times a week.
